The Medical Science Liaison - Board Certification exam (MSL-BC®) is the first-ever board certification for the Medical Science Liaison profession and is an effort to establish industry recognized standards for the MSL profession. The Medical Science Liaison Society is dedicated to the validation, through certification, of a specialized body of knowledge for individuals working as a Medical Science Liaison (or equivalent title) or leading a Medical Science Liaison team Professionals working as Medical Science Liaisons (MSL) can demonstrate mastery of specialized knowledge by meeting criteria and passing the examination offered by the Medical Science Liaison Society.

As a result, experience working as a Medical Science Liaison or MSL leader is required of all certification candidates; those aspiring to break into the MSL profession are NOT eligible. All MSLs and MSL leaders, including international applicants outside of the United States, are encouraged to take the examination if qualified. However, be advised that the exam and many references used to develop it are US based and reflective of US regulations as well as global guidance documents.

Please Note: Although paid membership in the Medical Science Liaison Society is not required, you MUST have an existing or create a new account before you proceed - either guest level (free) or professional. This step is required for two reasons:

  1. To take advantage of the reduced member fee if you are a paid member
  2. To connect with the secure MSL Society Learning Management System

Specific eligibility requirements include:

  1. Bachelor’s degree or higher from a regionally or nationally accredited educational institution. A copy of the candidate’s highest degree or transcript must be provided at the time of registration.

  2. One (1) year of cumulative experience working full-time as a Medical Science Liaison (or equivalent title) or leading a Medical Science Liaison team.

This certification is NOT intended for sales, marketing, or other non-MSL related functions within a company. All candidates must legally attest that they meet all the above requirements, which are subject to verification.

MACC Request for Special Accommodations

In accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), special accommodations may be available for individuals with documented disabilities. The Medical Affairs Certification Committee (MACC) will provide reasonable testing accommodations to candidates with a qualifying medical condition or documented disability that may impose on their ability to take the certification exam under standard testing circumstances. In order to be considered for special accommodations, the candidate will need to complete the MACC Request for Special Accommodations form. The submission of the request for special accommodations does not guarantee the approval of requested testing accommodations. All decisions are made on a case-by-case basis, consideration is based on information provided, and in accordance with the law.

Candidates should allow for a minimum of thirty (30) days for processing, while MACC makes every effort to process requests as quickly as possible. In order to expedite the process, candidates should include all the required documentation in their initial request.

The exam that candidates are requesting accommodations for must be purchased prior to requesting any accommodations.

Once a decision is made, candidates will be informed in writing regarding their request for special accommodations. The MACC reserves the right to make final judgement decisions regarding testing accommodations, and candidates are still required to follow the same exam testing policies.

Instructions for Documentation:
Attach a letter from a health care professional or physician, qualified to diagnose the disability or medical condition, as to the need for an accommodation.

The letter must include:
a. Specific disability or diagnosis.
b. Brief explanation of how the condition limits the candidate’s ability to take an exam under standard conditions.
c. If it is not a permanent disability, please indicate when it was first diagnosed, about how long you have had it, and under what circumstances the diagnosis was made.
d. Specific accommodations required. Keep in mind, these accommodations should be adequate for the candidate to complete the exam without creating an unfair advantage. If more time is required, the letter must specify exactly how much more time is needed, and why that amount is needed.

Once you have completed the form, please submit it and all relative documentation in one (1) single submission by email to certification@themsls.org
